Message Concerning Jon Sobrino's Christology
For us, the directors of Concilium, and for many people throughout the world, Jon Sobrino reflects on the Christian message of salvation in a way that is relevant for our journeys of faith. We wholeheartedly admire and thank our colleague and friend, and we praise God that in 1989 he was not killed like his fellow Jesuits and two women serving in his house in San Salvador.
All theological discourse falls short of the mystery of God's love in and through Jesus Christ. That is why every theologian is in the process of learning the fullness of truth. Jon Sobrino has an exemplary theological attitude of teaching and of learning from others, so as to understand the liberating truth of Jesus Christ, witnessed by the community of the Church.
The recent Notification by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (26 Nov. 2006, made public in March 2007) disregards the theological developments of the last fifty years and uses a deductive argumentation that is unable to do justice to Jon Sobrino's contextual and hermeneutical approach and his scholarly engagement with exegetical and theological developments.
We are convinced that Sobrino's Christology is faithful to the gospel, and that it fosters theological growth in the Church. The Notification says that his writings contain `notable discrepancies with the faith of the Church'. It may be asked who the theologians are whose views are taken as the basis for the Notification, and what kind of hermeneutics they wish to impose. The Sobrino case has implications for how the teaching authority of the Church deals with theologians, as much as for how theologians relate to the faith of the poor of the world. We are committed to service within our Church, to necessary theological debates, and to solidarity with all human beings who strive for justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.
We sincerely thank Jon Sobrino for his challenging contributions, and as directors of the journal Concilium we will continue our dialogue with all who seek truth and justice.
